For those who have ever truly wanted to speak Hermès, i.e. beyond 'Birkin' and 'Kelly', we have an exciting piece of news. In conjunction with publishing house Actes Sud Hermès have published a book which details all of the multifarious jargon used in their workshops, which describes their techniques from bags, to saddles and accessories. This is a really interesting idea, with Hermès going even further than their competitors to educate their followers on their artisanal heritage. It is a unique insight into the Maison as well as signalling how far we have come in terms of luxury buyers being considered as far more than simple consumers of product.

As New York Fashion Week draws to a close, we thought it was worth highlighting a key show for us. As with every season there are the designers who really inspire, and then there are the others who produce a solid collection but it lacks that certain je ne sais quoi. One design duo that really impressed NdM was Proenza Schouler. Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough are already coveted by fashion editors and have a loyal following, but we really felt their collection this season pushed forward with even greater innovation. The amount each piece was worked, with folds, woven leather, overzised silhouettes and woven paillette skirts, was truly exemplary. Each model rightly turned into a clothes horse, showcasing the very best in sophisticated and intelligent fashion design.

The papers, magazines, twitter and facebook have gone into overdrive mourning the loss of Whitney Houston. The extent of tributes highlights not only how talented Houston was, but what she represented. In the happier times of her life, she was a musical powerhouse, releasing many a hit, with millions of fans gripped by her powerful voice and personality. We can recall a song which resonates for one reason another, and her turn in the Bodyguard, made a fiction of her life but highlighted that she was a diva, earning the rapport with which she was received. Houston may have had bumps in her life, but NdM will remember that talent and passion are rewarded, and that achieving success requires hard work but focus as well. Houston in many ways was a role model, especially in empowering women, let that be remembered, and not every negative story printed by the tabloids.

Vanessa Friedman of the FT has covered the latest offering by Prada – a short video which sails closely to looking like a 3D video game to advertise its sunglasses. She suggests this is an intelligent way of tapping into the interest of many men, playing video games, whilst also showcasing Prada’s offering. We’re always keen to see what Prada does next, and this does seem rather genius – women will fixate on the March magazine editorials, or the catwalk looks, but men would rather watch a short video that is technologically and aesthetically intriguing, and if they respect the finished product they may then part with their money. A good lesson in selling a product without looking contrived or desperate; unless, we and Prada are wrong about the depths a man has when watching the clip?

A Perfumed Push

The fall out from Tamara Mellon’s departure from Jimmy Choo was much publicised and raised many a question as to why she left when it seemed she was with the brand for the long haul. It has come to our attention that the private equity house seems confident that Mellon was not integral to the success of the brand, by launching new advertisements for its first perfume. It has replaced the chutzpah pose of Mellon holding the perfume, with an image of an anonymous person reaching for the perfume bottle. This is yet to be a widespread image so once NdM have sourced this we shall update you.

This new look has gone seemingly unnoticed by many, but highlights that perhaps loyalty within luxury is over-rated and a brand can or should hold its own even if the initial person propelling the brand seems to have been ousted. But then again, perhaps this is a Jimmy Choo specific problem. The shoe-maker, so called Jimmy Choo, parted with his brand and name with Mellon taking over the helm, so perhaps it has come full circle with Mellon being the replaced party.

Givenchy + Pop?

Ricardo Tisci of Givenchy collaborated with Madonna for her looks during the Super Bowl; the results unsurprisingly were beautiful. Sligthly gothic, the right amount of gold embellishment and flatteringly angular, wish we were in Madaonna's shoes!

Shirts needn’t be white, office wear, as wonderfully exemplified by this Etro number. Style it with a boucle pencil skirt (grey or navy) or leather skinnies, add a ¾ length blazer and coral lipstick, and you’re good to go.

Da Vinci and His Students

The much lauded exhibition on Leonardo Da Vinci at the National Gallery has got NdM thinking. Da Vinci was multi-talented, fascinated with capturing the human form in all its vividness and educating others on the divine role of art. The exhibition places great importance on the students of Da Vinci, who were understandably in awe of his abilities and produced works of art emulating his methods. One thing that strikes is the question of whether a true master can only create work in his vision and whether students or admirers, although armed with the same materials, can really capture and continue such work. This point is especially pertinent in relation to fashion, where you have the likes of Chanel, Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent and Lanvin. All these houses were started by enigmatic and talented people channelling their vision and creating enduring fashion legacies, which have been continued by other designers at the helm. There are of course archives that designers can use and the study of historical facts and influences, but arguably things just aren’t the same. Lagerfeld’s collections are beautiful and he updates classic pieces championed by Chanel, but would his lavish shows, highly decorated pieces and choice of muses really hold true to Coco Chanel’s vision? Pilati’s collections have recently received lukewarm comments, and he is only applauded where he uses signature colours of Saint Laurent – evidence that only the creator can create faithful to the philosophy of a design house?

Why now?

We are in the midst of couture week and we have already witnessed many a sartorial triumph. Elie Saab has delivered as expected beautiful gowns worthy of the red carpet glitterati, fashion editors have been a'tweeting again on Bill Gaytten's latest Dior offering and we have the usual Chanel outing in the very grand, Grand Palais. However, what has really arrested NdM's attention is the return of Versace to couture week and Donatella's very telling comment on her reasoning, that for a luxury house to be considered as such this is a fundamental requirement. What a change from the typical discussion that usually attends this week, of whether or not couture is relevant in this day and age. As the luxury market shows limited signs of slowing for the time being, this is another turn in the saga. In an increasingly competitive market, where the luxury buyer is becoming increasingly discerning and visible, it will take more than live tweeting of fashion shows and virtual museums to convert fashion into real profit. We shall see how other brands with aim to make their offering more sophisticated in the months ahead...

A Master of Couture and Business

Cristobal Balenciaga’s influence on fashion is evident thorough the books and articles on his life and work, but also on the catwalk, where designers are inspired by the boxy and volumous silhouettes he favoured. At NdM we have learnt that he was inspired by the likes of Gabrielle Chanel and Vionnet, and incorporated art and culture of the 19^th and 20^th century into his designs. Even more importantly however, is how enterprising Balenciaga was. He had learnt how to sew from his mother and had the opportunity to mix with royalty and aristocrats, seeing first-hand their exacting standards and eye for the latest trends. During his lifetime he created three brands based on the Balenciaga aesthetic, but appealing to those with varying budgets and exacting nature for something unique. Further, he recognised the type of customer he attracted and showcased his pieces in fashionable holiday destinations of the upwardly mobile. Lastly, Balenciaga was an exemplary boss, upholding the highest standards and work ethic for himself and his staff, to ensure that there was integrity at the core of his brand. Balenciaga seems to have been one of the rare designers who established and led his brand from strength to strength, kept his customer at the centre of importance and created a working environment that allowed his visions to be beautifully executed. A exemplary individual indeed.

On February 21st Fabergé shall be hosting the biggest and chicest egg-hunt, lasting 40 days and 40 nights, across London. With over 200 uniquely designed eggs, the aim is to discover the Faberge treats all across the capital, whilst at the same time helping to raise money for two key charities Elephant Family and Action for Children. Golden Fashion Choices?

Although NdM is rarely in the market of covering anything celebrity-related, every so oft' we feel obliged to make comment. The Golden Globes have taken place in all their glory, and people have been glued to the images of what celebrities wore, with typical evening gowns being heralded as ‘hit’ looks. We would like to make a special mention of Tilda Swinton, who is heralded by many for her outfit choices – suitably fashionable, regal and always an extension of who she is. She favours Haider Ackermann for many of her looks; recognising a cut and look that is in essence, her. Celebrities may feel that they are subject to certain dress codes, but they risk the option of wearing yet another 'classic' red carpet gown, with ruffles, lace and trains galore, that any other starlet could have worn and looked much the same. If celebrities are intent on attending front rows and launches, carrying the latest bag or fronting campaigns, surely they (or their stylists) should have the confidence, intuition or at least the curiosity to experiment. Otherwise their ‘interest’ in fashion seems futile. And with the fashion world at their feet, we wonder why celebrities fail to commit to fashion with the intelligent gusto of Tilda Swinton, an absolute favourite of NdM.

NdM has spied a trend which is refreshingly new but at the same time seems so blindingly obvious that we wonder we weren’t doing it before. At both Chanel’s pre-fall 2012 collection and Stella McCartney, we have spotted models wearing slim-leg trousers with tunic dresses. Stella McCartney’s version is elegant, covered up yet beautifully tailored in an eye-catching blue print, and Chanel’s take is grungier but nonetheless hip. Head-to-toe like McCartney is the most uber-fashion, but the look can be created with a mix and match approach as well. To note, this look does not involve leggings or boot leg trousers, long t-shirts/jumpers, and certainly not accomplished by just throwing together a dress and trousers.

We recently posted about the Louis Vuitton – Marc Jacobs Exhibition in Paris. A retrospective on the brand but also Jacobs’s great contribution highlights how you can make a positive change, recognised by multi-million dollar companies and the likes of Bernard Arnault. Marc Jacobs, a native New Yorker, never dreamt he would be working in Paris for one of the most renowned and respected fashion heavy-weights, and 15 years later he has one of the most enviable jobs in fashion. Our thoughts: focus on your dream job, look at your current position and strengths, meet people and smarten up your CV and then with a huge dollop of confidence and flair, execute your game plan!

Paris is a heavy-weight when it comes to fashion, which is confirmed by the Louis Vuitton Marc Jacobs exhibition in Paris from March 9 until 16 September at Les Arts Décoratifs. The exhibition showcases both the heritage and successes behind the brand, but also Jacobs’ contribution in taking Vuitton from a luggage maker to a fully fledged fashion house. Expect to see the iconic trunks and the more recent collaboration with artists such as Prince led by Jacobs. No doubt this exhibition will remind us what enduring, covetable luxury really is, and maybe we'll even see a spike in orders for trunks to our homes...

The Marni/H&M collaboration is due in stores on 8^th March, which no doubt will have the average woman concocting her best plan of action to snare a couple of pieces from an exciting partnership.

However, Marni has gone a step further, and designed a T-shirt where 25% of the proceeds will go to the Red Cross in Japan, to help with the devastating effects of the earthquake. Fashion being charitable scores highly in NdM’s books, and even more so where Marni is involved.

Karl Lagerfeld is credited by many for his helm at Chanel, whilst also designing for Fendi, his own line and the plethora of other collaborations. At NdM we enjoy all the offerings of Chanel, from the RTW to the accessories to the breathtaking couture. The latest Metiers d’Art collection , is beguiling as it is beautiful. The Indian theme is strong yet with the Chanel twist, sari-like draping, tikka’s hanging on the model’s foreheads, scarves elegantly wrapped around models’ heads and nose rings. There is an element of elegance that sets off the craftsmanship of the jewels covering the models, and the dress/leather legging combo is one to be implemented in our wardrobes as soon as physically possible. This collection can make the most fashion averse person swoon. The only niggling point would be the lack of Indian models, as although Lagerfeld may not have been to India to produce such an inspired range, surely the heritage of India and its look could be conveyed with succinct accurateness by a few more Indian models?

Candles can be a an easy present, or a simple pick me up. However, for those that like to buy something with a nuance, Cire Trudon has opened a store on Marylebone High Street. This brand has been producing candles since 1643 and craftsmanship is a word that is readily bandied around this brand. Unlike other candle producers Cire Trudon uses natural wax, which although makes the candles more expensive, you can at least feel assured that these candles that were good enough for Versailles, are good enough for you. The website provides a narrative of the history of the brand, which is both engaging and simple, and lets its candles do all the talking.

Blahnik + Books = a sublime read

Manolo Blahnik has provided illustrations for a book based on his life of making beautiful shoes intermixed with a fairytale. The result is 'The Elves and the Shoemaker'. Camilla Morton seamlessly combines fiction and real life, enhanced by the beautiful illustrations inked in the usual Blahnik style. Morton previously worked her magic on Christian Lacroix in 'Sleeping Beauty', and we’re keen to get our hands on this masterpiece as well.

As we near Christmas, it may dawn on us that we may not have seen some friends as regularly as we thought. The evenings may get darker sooner, so finding the perfect bar for a catch up with a dear friend is a pursuit of utmost importance. Ideally somewhere that is beautifully decorated but not fussy, well lit but not so dim you can’t see your companion and a delectable selection of bar snacks to stave off the pangs for dinner. We have found such a place, ideally located on Pall Mall: The Balcon Bar. It is slightly opulent, has a dash of the Wolseley feel and transports you away from the busyness of nearby Trafalgar Square. Have a drink and chat, and remember, an idle life isn’t so idle with good conversation and a witty companion – that might be harder to find, but at least we’ve helped with the perfect bar.

Hermes has realised that the Chinese are fond of luxury and like many other brands has decided to make an offering to the Chinese market. Instead of offering the same merchandise available in Europe and America, Hermes has launched it's equivalent in Shanghai called Shang Xia. The ethos behind the brand is the same as Hermes, understated luxury with a focus on workmanship and heritage. The jewellery has art deco angles, the clothes are flowingly structured and the ceramics are opulent in their minimalism.

Melancholia

Is it a mood or just the planet that is heading towards earth? Melancholia is the new film by Lars Von Trier, starring Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg, where the viewer is transported to scenes from a wedding which is doomed, to the seemingly real life threat of life as we know it coming to an end. This film cannot be pigeon-holed in a particular genre; the relationship between siblings and partners is explored, as well as love, innocence and the feeling of despair, whether real or something which we recognise when we see it but can’t explain, as is excellently conveyed by Dunst’s portrayal of the sister that is beyond depressed yet far from weak when it comes to the doomed end. The images in the film are captivating, the pace itself shifts from palatial to slow but never feels stunted and the viewer is gripped throughout, feeling connected to the lives of the characters, even after having left the cinema. Although a strong sense of surrealism follows this film, the real theme of the ‘other’ be it an emotion that drains us but we can’t describe it, to fear of the ‘other’, makes this a recent favourite of NdM.

There are certain parts of the body that are typically on shown in many an outfit, be it the legs, the back or some cleavage. There are those designers however, that realise that a woman looks and feels her best, when what is on show is much more discrete. Some of Lanvin’s most beautiful creations are the one-shouldered dresses, with ruffles cascading on one side off the shoulder. Roland Mouret’ recent collection’s most noteworthy pieces are those which are just off the shoulder, highlighting one of the most underrated parts of the body, the shoulder. A glimpse of flesh, enough to draw the eye but leave enough mystery is the balance any empowered, fashionable woman needs.

The stomach area has also been popular, as with Versace, Nina Ricci and Roland Mouret. Of course one would need to ensure that there isn’t too much excess in that area, but with cropped tops and high-waisted skirts, this is sexy with a fashion slant. If you’re not that confident, add a sheer cardigan as in Ricci, but then again if you’ve got the body, all you need to do is add heels!

The continuous round of gossip and denials surrounding who will take the helm at Dior, and whether Stefano Pilati is off from YSL and if Raf Simons and Marc Jacobs are on the move, reminds NdM of a blog post by Vanessa Friedman. She wrote about aspiring young designers who want to work for themselves and eschew the possibility of working for a large design house as they feel it compromises their individual flair as a designer. One thing that has become clear, the difficulty in finding a replacement for Galliano, or in fact any of the larger design houses, is that there is a lack of sufficiently trained and rounded designers. The issue isn’t that there aren’t enough people out there who are technically excellent, or cannot capture the essence of a brand and create noteworthy collections season after season. The problem is that there are not enough designers who are accomplished technically, who can translate and further a brand’s identity and have the business sense and commercial awareness to work alongside the financiers of such brands. This highlights an issue within fashion itself, it may be a hub of creatives with awe-inspiring clothes, but fundamentally fashion is a business. Those that see the City and fashion as diametric opposites are missing the point - the best designers are those that can do their job with supreme skill, but also are aware that there are other parties with different interests, all of which can make a brand a success, commercially and creatively. Younger designers should ensure they pursue opportunities to become more rounded as designers, or perhaps those that are more business-minded should dip their toes into creativity and see what the results are.

Donatella has always ensured the Versace woman turns heads when she enters a room; and this collection not only did that but made us yearn to be her too. The mini-dresses were playful with thoughtful detail on the shoulder, yet not whimsical and the use of white with studding added a grown-up touch without looking too harsh. The introduction of colour and pattern every so often added a welcome dimension, without being brash or seeming unnecessary. The flowing gowns were a master class in producing a dress which makes the wearer look like a goddess, without having to be a supermodel. The real touch for NdM, was the hair. Femininity is marked by many traits, but long flowing hair, blow-dried to perfection cannot be challenged. Even if we dream about the beautiful clothes, we can make the hair a reality, and sooner the better we say.

Sixties spirit and plenty of va-va-voom - Richard Nicoll's collection we feels shall be much debated as the reference point - Henri-Georges Clouzot’s unfinished 1966 film 'L’Enfer' - has itself divided opinion. Is it a work of cinematographic art or an unfinished mess stumbling on it's own far-flung pretentiousness? Translated onto the catwalk we witnessed a dazzling array of materials, across neoprene, metallic lace, organza and georgette, opening with a statement cornflower blue and then followed by pinks, greys and blacks. We at NdM have long been champions of Jonathan Saunders and this season he continued to impress. Beautiful dresses, delicate camisoles, slouchy pajamas and overzised sweaters were deftly mixed in with a fair share of baroque inpsired silks and jacquards and some pin-dotted cottons, graded across a colour palette reminiscent of the sugary shades of South Beach. Excellent design, excellent execution.

A Shoe Battle Like no Other continues...

As promised we have an update on the Yves Sait Laurent and Christian Louboutin saga. The judge has ruled that he will not grant an injunction, which would stop YSL producing the red-soled shoes, a judgement which has of course outraged the Louboutin camp, who intend to appeal. Surely, if YSL is not stopped from producng their shoes, the sanctity of trademarks in the fashion world will seriously be at risk, where distinctive symbols on shoes, accessories or clothes, will no longer help the customer identify with a particular brand. Is this democratic justice, or the hard work of one brand being undermined by another that should know better?

Fabergé Reinvented

When we think of Fabergé, images of opulent, bejewelled eggs are conjured instantly. The first eggs were produced in 1885, commissioned by Tsar Alexander II for his wife. A tradition of commissioning these eggs became a habit of the Russian royal family, from generation to generation.

After the royal family's reign came to an end, Fabergé went out of fashion for years, with many masterpieces destroyed in successive events. Fabergé speaks from a different era, where craftsmanship of these beautiful items was revered and owning such a piece was a sign not only denoting wealth, but status also.

The brand was purchased by Brian Gilbertson in 2007, and having hired both Mario Testino and Carine Roitfeld (of Paris Vogue fame) to be part of the revamp of the house, Fabergé eggs have been rightly reinstated as the ultimate luxury item to have. There is however usually a catch with such beautiful and bespoke pieces - the astronomical price. Of course though, one doesn't need to own a Fabergé egg to marvel at its exquisiteness; the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace have an exhibition of Fabergé pieces until October 3, all rightly magnificent.

If we ever think of taking a trip to Milan, the first thought that pops up is the fashion and shopping. From previous postings it's evident that NdM has a soft spot for it. Italian style has it's own oomph factor, with influences of La Dolce Vita, and age-old traditions of producing beautiful lace, supreme quality leather and lustrous silk. The Somerset House exhibition, 'Masters of Style: Celebrating the Stories behind Italian Fashion', encaptures all that is great about Italian style, covering key Italian design houses, taking the onlooker on a journey of each brand with evocative words and images.

The designers profiled range from the masters of Italian sexy, Dolce & Gabbana, to the queen of intelligent fashion forwardness, Miuccia Prada. Not only do you gain an understanding of the uniqueness of each of the fashion houses in the exhibition, but you also begin to appreciate, or in the case of fashionistas, continue to be enthralled, with the magic of fashion and the ability to create a beauty that permeates our lives whether we realise it or not. We suggest you move fast as the exhibition runs until 14 August, and then get a one way ticket to Italy!

The world of fashion is of course full of egos and there's always the risk of treading on some toes. As the case commences between Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Louboutin, where it is alleged that Laurent's red-soled shoes in its pre-spring/summer 2011-12 collection are copying the most recognisable trait of Louboutin's, it seems that toes have been well and truly stepped on. Each designer works hard to set itself apart from other designers by developing recognisable and original nuances to its brand, be it quilted Chanel handbags, Lulu Guinness lips or Alexander McQueen skulls. Designer brands have always faced risks from the high street imitating their goods, but surely such an issue should not arise with such heavy weight brands, with all their resources and archives to help develop original branding. On the other hand, isn't creativity being limited if one use of a particular colour or effect means that no one else is able to use it? We will watch the case unfold and keep you updated shoe by shoe.

Dior-drama

The fashion world has been taken by storm by the recent fall from grace by Dior's John Galliano.

We at Nom de Mode have regularly feted Galliano's creations, but now it is inevitable that the house of Dior will beckon in a new talent and we of course wait with bated breath.

There have been many articles, tweets, blog posts and all other manner of ink spilt over this contentious issue. Alber Elbaz and Ricardo Tisci appear to be front runners but of course Dior is keeping its cards very close to its chest.

Our one request is that the inheritor of this mammoth legacy ensures that the evangelising spirit of Christian Dior's 'New Look' is re-injected to the brand. Galliano brought much pomp and splendour to the couture collections; however the Ready-to-Wear is where a design house should really distill its design DNA. Another point to remember, made so well by a Dior employee we spoke with, is that Dior is much larger than any one designer and that at its core is the rich history, archives and philosophy above all, that sustains it and captures its followers.

Miss Havisham-Marchesa

Marchesa for A/W '11-12 was a resplendent take on Dickens' Miss Havisham. The entire collection, with its stark colour palette of black, red and white, interspersed with cream and pale lilac, was full of elegant drama. With hand embroidery, lace, draping and all manner of sartorial creativity, Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig showed red-carpet glamour, with echoes of the the haunting un-done quality of Miss Havishmas herself with deliberately frayed and uneven hems. This collection pays strong homage to the brand's baroque roots, whilst adding a certain modern melodrama. Our looks of the collection:

New York is showcasing at the moment and we have been avidly watching at NdM for those collections that out-shine the rest.

The first due for commendation is Victoria Beckham's richly imagined and well cut offering. Working across the rainbow she has developed her style from her initial highly structured power dresses to flowing pieces that envelope the body in a more easy-going elegance. There was also greater emphasis placed on layering as well as an increasingly significant nod to accessories. Our favourties pieces are as below:

Personalised PRADA

Prada have introduced a new personal touch, by allowing customers to adorn bags from their travel collection with personalised initials in bold and bright colours. This new development has people divided; is this the ultimate in tacky, selling something with initials so as to seem personal to that person, highlighting their 'good taste' in choosing that particular bag, or in fact, an excellent way to combine luxury and craftsmanship, with your personal touch and taste? Personalisation is not new to designer handbags, Louis Vuitton, Anya Hindmarch and Goyard all allow customers to emblazon their initials on select items, so Prada has made a savvy decision to offer the service as there seems to be a market. However, when we purchase a handbag, we would like the bag to do the talking. Be it the 'DIOR' hanging from a Lady Dior bag, or double C's on the Chanel 2.55 clasp - our initials are superfluous to the aesthetic attraction to the handbag and could even be seen as doing the bag and its beauty a disservice!

Carven is Calling

Good, no - actually, great news. Carven, the luxury label that began during 40's couture making the most desirable ready-to-wear at affordable prices, has opened a store in St Germain des Pres, Paris. The label was established in 1945 and now has been givven an injection of current cool with former Givenchy designer, Guillaume Henry, taking the lead. This highlights how there is a real need for beautiful clothes that are priced well and wearable anytime of day, and do o't require the wearer to be constantly worried that something awful may befall their outfit. Net-a-Porter and Browns stock Carven, but it's more chic to buy some French when in France. The title of this post might seem a tad bit elusive to some but to the vast others, the reference point is clear. It is of course homage to Hermés, which has lately opened up a pop-up store on Ledbury Road. 'J'aime mon carré' is the theme of Hermés' globe-trotting initiative, aiming to tap into a younger and less traditional customer. The entire campaign centres around the label's collaboration with photographer Matt Irwin - who travelled around four capitals with four young women and documented how their scarves tie into their varied lives. The idea is indeed novel and works tremendously well. Not only can you peruse the various collections, there is also the opportunity to be styled with Hermés scarves and have your photo taken. The store, spread over two floors, has a fun and welcoming air, with excellent Hermés hands ready to introduce you into the prestigious design house with genuine enthusiasm. NdM wholeheartedly recommends you make a visit and find your very own carré à aimer.

Dior's Beauty Captured

After a short spell away from penning updates, we are back with a glorious bang. At the top of the agenda is the Dior Illustrated: René Gruau and the Line of Beauty exhibtion at Somerset House. This space was last transformed for the superb Margiela exhibition, and this reincarnation does not disappoint. Dior is a house steeped in history and prestige, maintaining the highest standards both aesthetically and in respect of quality. The exhibition shows the artistic flair of Renau Gruau when teamed up with Dior to illustrate the Dior philosophy and fantasy, and the devotion of both Gruau and Christian Dior to evoke and inspire the ultimate Parisienne.

As you walk along you are transported to heady thoughts of old world glamour and exquisite taste. There is almost a hint of magic, couture dresses are scattered amongst the sketches, giving 3D substance to what seems like a dream we would all like to be a part of. As you peruse the collection of sketches, you become immersed in the Dior mystique and the muse that Gruau and Dior were inspired by takes shape in our mind, disappearing only when you leave the exhibition, with the hint of Miss Dior still lingering in the air. Lanvin Goodness to Share

Change is afoot in the fashion world. Lanvin is to collaborate with H&M, bringing feminine luxurious pieces to the masses. The likes of Stella McCartney and Karl Lagerfeld have successfully collaborated with H&M, but can Lanvin's unequivocally beautiful dresses and other ready-to-wear pieces be channelled into the high street? Alber Elbaz is no fashion snob, nor inclined to follow the latest fad to make a quick buck, but is he not worried about the cachet of Lanvin being diminished by taking away the exclusivity? People should be able to experience the fashion might of Lanvin and Alber Elbaz regardless of their age or spending ability, but at NdM we will be waiting for the collaboration with bated breath, we desperately hope that those experiencing Lanvin for the first time will be blown away by the enormity of it.

All Talk but no Walk?

Paris Fashion Week will be feeling distinctly different this year. Karl Lagerfeld has announced that he will not be showing at Paris Fashion Week this October, and will instead produce the Chanel A/W 11 collection and sell directly online. It is a great step that fashion is realising that the beauty it creates with its clothes is and should be enjoyed by all, not only those that have an Amex to hand. However, will we feel the same flutter of excitement seeing Chanel selling online, compared to the moment the first model hits the catwalk and the last bows out? At NdM we view fashion elitism as restrictive and unnecessary, however, fashion is not all about the clothes. It's about the experience, emotions and that fleeting moment where the piece on the catwalk has to be yours. The catwalk is a necessary part of fashion and the props and music provide a background for the collection and gives the brand more substance. Chanel especially has always put on wonderful shows, pushing our imagination to another fashion sphere, and shouldn't stop now. What will all those that dream of getting access to Chanel at Paris Fashion Week hope and lust after- every girl needs a dream, Lagerfeld should be careful he doesn't end them prematurely!

What a Feast, Pizza East

Shoreditch has always been a cooler part of London, with artists, designers and musicians calling it home. On a recent visit to Pizza East, just off Shoreditch High Street, NdM gives its seal of approval to east London. The menu has the classics such as margherita pizza, but also mixes it up with delicious but unusual toppings, a selection of moreish starters (with the juiciest olives), and puddings which had us in a tizz. Not only does the food get a huge thumbs up, the ambience is cool and buzzy with soft lighting, yet intimate enough for dinner with a group of friends. The Man-bag is a contentious topic, dividing people into the oh yes group, and the hell no group. Well, we don’t think it’s fair that men are assumed to not have much to carry and so left out of the equation when it comes to bags.

We do not encourage small bags that resemble something a woman would carry, but stylish bags for those that need to carry gym kit, papers and other bits. The best approach is to go with something utilitarian looking, but nothing which is too structured as it starts to look like a brief case, which only looks good with a suit. Go with whatever colour you fancy, but please don’t match it with your shoes!
